There are two types of abuse control in use by nevernet staff and chat room moderators. These are referred to as chat room bans and network bans.
A chat room ban is instituted by nevernet staff or its associates in official public chat rooms, or by independent chat room moderators in all other chat rooms. You may be banned from a chat room if you are found to be violating the conduct guidelines, however, independently managed chat rooms are free to administer their own rules in tandem with the network's guidelines.
Network administrators may be present in any chat room to assist with maintaining our ability to provide quality chat services to visitors. They will never establish bans in private chat rooms. If a user makes a request to have a ban removed, a network administrator will only remove it only if a chat room moderator cannot be contacted. The founder will be immediately notified by email, memo or private message of any ban removals.
A chat room ban never expires on its own, so it is important for chat room moderators to clear unnecessary bans regularly. Once a chat room ban has been placed, it stays permanently until they remove the ban. Some chat rooms employ bots to automatically remove bans after a specific period of time has elapsed. If you wish to discuss your ban with someone who can remove the ban, you can contact those in charge via two methods.
The first method is to send a message directly to the chat room's memo mailbox. Any chat room moderator can check these messages, but there are no guarantees that someone will read your message once it has been sent, as not all chat room moderators check their messages on a regular basis. You can review the tutorial explaining how to send a message to the chat room.
An alternative means of contacting a chat room regarding a
ban is by private messaging the chat room founder. To determine
the chat room founder, type /cs info #roomname.
You can also contact the person who set the topic of the chat
room, who is normally a chat room moderator. If and only if
you are not able to contact a chat room moderator, a network
administrator may be able to assist you in the #help (english)
or #aide (french)
chat rooms.
Network-wide bans are only placed in extreme circumstances. These circumstances vary and are discretionary, but some examples are listed below to provide a general understanding of the types of conduct which would be grounds for such a ban.
In rare circumstances, you may be disconnected from the network but NOT banned. This will normally only occur when you have requested that a ghost of your nickname to be disconnected so that you can assume the nickname.
A method is employed for preventing users from mass-messaging ("spamming") all the users in some chat rooms. A user named DoNotMessage_AntiSpam exists in these chat rooms to provide this function. If you message the user named DoNotMessage_AntiSpam, it will automatically initiate a network ban on your computer. You will then be unable to connect to any nevernet chats for one month. You may have this type of ban lifted by contacting us.
Network adminstrators can also initiate disconnections of users, but this is normally only used on pseudo-users such as bots or automated processes. An administrator might also initate a disconnection if services are unavailable and a ghost nickname needs to be disconnected.
You may be banned from the entire network for the following:
If you believe you have been banned from the server without cause, please contact us immediately.
If our policy on bans changes, we will advise you by sending you a global message on the chat server.
This does not affect your statutory rights.
